Bulk cargo vessels mainly berth at Princess Royal Jetty. The North Breakwater can also accommodate larger vessels.
Vehicle access directly from the trunk road avoids going through the town, and speeds up turnaround times. The availability of a fully certified weighbridge and commissioning of a new purpose built sampling station has made this an excellent location for handling the import and export of bulk shipments including grain, oil seed rape, fertiliser, road salt and peat.
Princess Royal Jetty
The jetty is serviced with fresh water, fuel and electricity. Lighting provides the possibility of safe late night working when necessary. Bulk cargo vessels up to 90m in length and 6m draft can use the western side of the jetty. Berths 2 and 3 on the eastern side of the jetty may also be available for vessels up to 140m in length and 6.2m draft. Depending on the tide cycle during a proposed visit, a greater water depth may be available to allow shipments of over 7,500 tonnes to be considered.
North Breakwater
The North Breakwater has been used successfully to export grain consignments of over 12,000 tonnes, and could accommodate larger vessels. The addition of a wave wall has significantly reduced downtime and improved the working environment, making this a practical option.
